Recently established under the creative direction of Andrey Savin, British brand Savin London is passionate about creating contemporary bridal wear that is unequivocally 'made in London'. Originally from Russia, Andrey moved to the capital three years ago from Paris where he had spent nine years perfecting his craft and working for a number of luxury French fashion houses.
At the helm of his own contemporary luxury British bridal brand, Savin London, Andrey now creates interesting and unique designs that reflect the traditional conception of the wedding dress while constantly pushing boundaries.
'Some of the bridal gowns in my collection are made up of three to four different layers. I imagine the bride would wear the first dress while preparing with her friends and gradually put on different layers until she has created the final look. For me, there is a certain sense of ceremony and preparation. It's part of creating special memories.'
Annabel and I are particularly enamoured with Andrey's shorter dresses and the mid-century aesthetic they evoke. Besides, it's always a joy to find a designer creating styles especially for brides who want to make the most of their pins!
Andrey has a wealth of experience having worked in numerous roles within the fashion industry, including design, sales, marketing and product development.
'Creating my own brand allows me to control every aspect of the company, to design and realise the many different ideas I have and, above all, to express myself. I am passionate about fabrics, design and architecture and how these are reflected in the brand.'
'There is something about the wedding industry that I find intriguing. The complexity of each garment and the emphasis on the dress during the ceremony makes the design process that much more exciting.'
'Every piece is hand-crafted in our atelier. Being 'made in London' and 'in-house' affords us total control over the quality of the garment. We know every single piece that leaves our studio is made to the highest possible standard.'
'Inspiration is very elusive, but I think everything starts by simply looking around. I am constantly moving around, searching, sourcing, and exploring different things. I also like to draw. Wherever I am, if I have an idea, I will draw it. It might be something I never use or something I could develop further down the line, but I think it's important to put it on paper.'
'Once a design has been finalised, we make the first pattern and toile. We play around with shapes, lines and proportion. After a fitting, we finalise the pattern and create the first sample in the actual fabrics. We then have another fitting of the sample to see whether any changes need to be made or not. This process can take from three days to up to two weeks.'
Andrey's designs range from £345 up to £2456. As many of the wedding dresses are a combination of different pieces, the final cost really depends on your individual vision and desires.
