A Tiered Wedding Dress for a Delightful Peach and Pale Blue Country House Wedding

Happy Friday evening all!  I hope you have lovely plans for the weekend?  I am off to watch Swan Lake later today, which I am super excited about as I adore the ballet- I think it’s all those amazing outfits and the swathes of tulle- a little like a wedding really…  Today’s wedding has the most incredibly gorgeous dress, as well as a stunning venue, gentlemen in pale blue and endless smiles.  Let’s begin…

Meet Laura, a PA, and Neil, an Asset Management Analyst, who married at the very beautiful Lartington Hall on Saturday the 12th of September 2015.  Their venue wasn’t what they had imagined choosing when they first started to plan, but it’s so lovely- I can see why their minds were instantly changed when they visited.

“We originally wanted a festival inspired rustic style wedding, but that wouldn’t have worked with our venue, so we didn’t really have anything in particular that inspired the styling of the day. The peach dresses and pale blue trousers started a bit of a colour scheme, but we were adamant not to have it all matchy matchy, so we just went along planning whatever we liked and hoped it would all work on the day.”

Laura wore the utterly gorgeous Marteena by Katya Katya Shehurina – an incredibly elegant tiered dress reminiscent of the tiered fashions of the 1950’s worn with a delicate nude slip.

“I first discovered Katya through a Love My Dress feature, so thank you! I was very lucky that designer Katya was in the UK for a bridal show the same weekend I was shopping, so my appointment was actually with her which is a memory I’ll treasure forever.”

Photography by Sarah Jane Ethan.“One of the first things I decided after getting engaged was that I wanted peach bridesmaid dresses.  My beloved grandma passed away 6 months before we got engaged, and she loved peach (as do I), so it was a given.  I also knew I didn’t want them all the same, so my bridesmaids and I started a mission of find the perfect high street dresses in similar shades of peach.

Three of the dresses were from ASOS, one from Warehouse, and my little sister Amy’s dress was Yumi Girls from House of Fraser.  Having different dresses meant the girls could all choose a style to suit them, that they really loved.”

On their feet the bridesmaids wore fluffy peach sandals from Next.

I realised from other appointments that I much preferred the nude or unusual colours in dresses, and that I definitely wanted something a bit different, so I put a nude slip under the dress to make the white tulle look less white, and then I was so in love and knew it was the one!  Katya also does ivory, mint or blue slips, which I did consider for the evening to suit Neil’s pale blue trousers, but I so loved the dress with the nude slip, I wanted to stay in it forever.”

“I went back to the shop again on my own to get the skirt length cut to fit me (by hand by Katya while I was wearing it with my Vivienne Westwood shoes, drinking prosecco) I still feel so lucky to have met Katya- she really is super talented and brings something really unique to the bridal market; all of her dresses are beautiful and really suited to the bride that wants something a little bit different.

The attention to detail is phenomenal and every dress is so comfortable too.  Katya described my dress as being for the fun boho bride who wants to dance the night away, and she encouraged me to twirl around the shop to see what the layers looked like, it was the perfect dress for me.”

On her head Laura chose a stunning flower crown, created by florist Hannah and for jewellery, a pair of pearl earrings which had belonged to her Grandma.  She also had two bracelets made from an old pearl necklace of her Grandma’s- one for her and one for her Mum, so they could feel close to her on the day- such a lovely idea.  Her feet were treated to a fab pair of Vivienne Westwood shoes– Melissa- in pearlescent ivory with a gold bow.

“We wanted unstructured wild looking flowers, so we looked through quite a few florists before finding Hannah at Wildflower. We knew straight away from Hannah’s blog that she was the one for us, but when we met her and discussed everything we were certain we’d made the right choice. Our only stipulation was that we wanted it to look wild, unstructured, and not too matchy, which Hannah said was perfect for her as she could let her creativeness go!”

“The flowers really were perfect in every way; I don’t think I expected them to be as beautiful as they were!  I’ve dried out my floral crown which is hanging off a frame on the living room wall, and I’ve got some of the dried stems in medicine bottles around the house.  The bouquet is being dried out and pressed so I can frame that too.”

“Neil and I met on holiday in Greece in 2008. We kept in touch and after a couple of months of phone conversations and emails I flew from Newcastle to Essex for the weekend. We spent the next year travelling up and down to see each other, then in July 2009 I moved out of home for the first time and went 300 miles from the North East to Essex!”

“I remember people thinking I was mad and very brave, and looking back I suppose it was a scary step and a huge risk, but I didn’t think that at the time I was just excited to be together. I said to everyone ‘if it doesn’t work at least I won’t regret not trying’, but I always knew it would be the start of something amazing.”

In April 2014 during the Easter weekend, we went to the New Forest for a break. We had a romantic lodge with a hot tub, and on the first night Neil cooked while I sat on the sofa drinking red wine, eating olives and reading. After a lovely meal Neil got down on one knee and proposed! It was the most surreal & amazing moment, and totally unexpected.

We have travelled a lot together, so the last thing I expected was a proposal in the UK, but that made it all the more special.  Family and friends were completely shocked when we called them with the news, I’ll remember those deafening screams into my ear forever…”

Neil didn’t want to wear a suit so instead chose pale blue trousers from Next and had them tapered to make them skinny fit.  He wore the trousers with a waistcoat from Ted Baker in a light grey with a pink and blue checked pattern, a lemon and paisley tie from TM Lewin and navy blue brogues by Bertie.  I love a groom with a definite sense of his own style!

“The best man and ushers wore the same as Neil, but had blue flecked ties from Racing Green, so Neil would stand out. We asked the 3 dads to wear whatever suit they felt comfortable in, as they obviously wouldn’t have worn what Neil and the boys wore, and we got them the same Racing Green ties as the groomsmen.”

“I’m lucky enough to have both my dad and my step dad, so they both walked me down the aisle which was just perfect.  I came down the aisle smiling which was a nice surprise as I feared I’d be crying like I do at everyone else’s weddings.  I think I was just overwhelmingly happy in that exact moment.”

“We wrote our own vows and are so pleased we did as it felt really personal, and like we were really promising what we really wanted to.  Luckily we both kept it together and no tears were shed.”

I’m delighted to share Neil and Laura’s vows with our readers- I think they’re just lovely.

(Neil’s vows to Laura) You know me better than anyone else in the world, yet somehow we are still together. You make me the person I am today. You are my greatest inspiration, perfectly unique and beautiful. I cannot wait to grow old and crazy together. I promise to always love you, respect and support you, and to live in truth with you. Most importantly I promise to never shun your quite frankly stunning kitchen singing and dance routines.

(Laura’s vows to Neil) I never thought I believed in soul mates, but even a sceptic can see that you are mine, and I am yours.  You are my best friend, my partner in crime, and my one true love. You make me laugh every day, and bring out the best in me. I promise to love you unconditionally, even when you leave dirty socks everywhere, and I promise to be loyal and faithful to you always. I promise to make you laugh every day, even if we don’t feel like laughing, and to be there for you through whatever challenges we may face. I promise that the end of our engagement, is only the start of a new romance, and an exciting journey together as husband and wife.

The couple also had two readings, read by close friends, an acoustic guitarist to play Laura down the aisle and they danced back down the aisle together to Michael Jackson’s Don’t stop till you get enough.  Such a happy ceremony.

Our couple chose one of my favourite North East photographers to capture their big day- Sarah-Jane Ethan.  I just adore her work- it’s always so full of light and uber romantic.

“We found Sarah-Jane Ethan after a lot of browsing through North East photographers, but SJ’s relaxed light style was by far our favourite.  Because of the distance we had a Skype “meeting” and we were instantly excited by her enthusiasm. The distance was never an issue as SJ was always on email and even did our pre-wedding shoot in London, so we just took an afternoon off work instead of having to travel. We were so pleased we did this as it helped the nerves and helped us find our best sides, plus on the day it meant she felt like an old friend.”

We got the photos printed onto book pages and used this as our guestbook for people to sign. We knew the wedding photos would be good as every album SJ uploads on her website is amazing, but they really did surpass our expectations.  We hardly noticed her on the day other than her infectious laughter- all of the guests were commenting on how lovely she was- we cannot recommend her enough.”

“Our youngest usher was my 12 year old brother Kai; we managed to find him pale blue chinos from BHS in pretty much the same colour as Neil and the boys’ trousers.  His waistcoat was from M&S and bow tie from Ted Baker. Our nephew Henry was our page boy and he wore an M&S outfit which matched the boys pale blue trousers- he was definitely the most dapper there!”

“We viewed five venues in total.  Lartington Hall was the last and as soon as we walked in the tears started flowing… The feeling you get as you first walk into the impressive hallway is amazing, it really takes your breath away. There are so many different rooms, all individual and full of character, and the gardens and grounds full of sheep are stunning. Our only concern was how to decorate it to suit our style (a bit rough around the edges), as being a grand ornate venue it wasn’t really suited to putting hay bales around the place for a festival theme.”

“We decided on vintage books for centrepieces (as I’m a book worm), with vintage tins and medicine bottles for the flowers, all bought from eBay or Battlesbridge antiques market in Essex.  The medicine bottles took a lot of cleaning, but they did look great on the day and gave the rustic feel we wanted.”

My bridesmaid Elizabeth made a cross stitch of us and our cats which went on the card table, which is absolutely amazing and now has pride of place in our living room and my maid of honour Siobhan made us the coolest bunting as an engagement present, which we used on the day too. We also had pictures of our grandparents on their wedding days alongside vintage cameras, which was a nice touch to our otherwise colourful décor.

I also bought an American mailbox and sprayed it white, covered it with flowers, and put some vintage postcards next to it for people to leave their ‘words of wedded wisdom’ (more inspiration from Love My Dress).

“With the help of my step dad, we made a sign for the roadside directing people into the venue, and a sign for the garden. We also bought a coconut shy for some outdoor entertainment, but due to rain all morning it wasn’t set up until later, although quite a few people still managed to have a go before dark!  A family friend sorted giant balloons for us, which we tied tissue paper tassels onto- these were purely for photos but they were placed by the entrance of the hall and looked lovely, so I’m really glad we got them.”

“We both love cheese so wanted a cheese tower, but I’m a keen baker so definitely wanted a sweet cake as well. We didn’t want to go crazy on budget, and whilst I was up for making my own cake I didn’t think it was a good idea on top of everything else, so friends and family kindly helped create a cake table.

Everyone was moved into another room for tea, coffee and cakes after dinner, so most of them got eaten, but there were bags to take some home for those who couldn’t manage any. We cut the cheese tower before our first dance, then it was served with crackers & chutneys alongside the evening food.”

“In the lead up to the wedding I did start to worry that all the mix of rustic items would look silly in such a beautiful non-rustic venue, but it all came together and looked great. I definitely think we succeeded in making our wedding a fun, non-traditional affair, filled with laughter.”

“We planned on a photo booth for the evening but Neil somehow found one that was inside a London taxi. This really worked for our North v South aspect of the wedding, and was even more fun than a normal Photo Booth, if that’s possible…”

“We wanted a band to play in the evening, but we just couldn’t find one we loved enough to splurge on, so we took a risk and decided not to have one. Years before my friends and I joked that we wanted Tommy from Worldheadquarters club in Newcastle to play at our wedding if we ever got married, so I thought I’d send him a message. Tommy isn’t a wedding DJ- he owns, runs and plays at WHQ, as well as putting on his own events, but he said yes as the date worked for him.

“So much planning goes into the little touches that you almost forget about the ceremony itself, but it was definitely our favourite part of the day. The anticipation waiting to walk into the room and down the aisle, into a sea of smiling faces all there for us, is just an incredible feeling. Saying our vows to each other and hearing the readings, it was just perfect. The speeches were another highlight, the perfect mix of hilarious and heartfelt, the amount of love in the room all cheering and laughing was just immense.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“Enjoy every second of the planning and the build-up, it really does fly over!  Relish spending time with your friends and family when it comes to dress shopping, picking bridesmaid dresses and just planning in general, people are more than happy to help if you ask, so if you’re feeling it’s all a bit much to do on your own then get people involved.

Make sure you get your husband to be involved in the planning too, Neil had so many good ideas and really got stuck in, which made it more about ‘us’ than it being just the bride’s day, which a lot of people seem to think it is. It gets to a stage where you wonder what you talked about before getting engaged, but as long as you just enjoy it and don’t become obsessed by it, you should find a nice balance.

I will treasure the memories I have from the build up to our wedding forever; it really was the best year of my life. People make so much effort for you, which makes you realise even more what an amazing bunch of friends and family you have.”

“Make sure you spend plenty time with your new husband on the day, I’ve heard people regret not spending enough time together as they were too busy mingling with guests. People generally understand that you can’t spend as much time as you’d like with everyone and you don’t want to regret not spending enough time together on your wedding day.”

Take a moment together to have a little chat and take it all in, we went to our room for five minutes away from it all with a drink, the whole thing is overwhelming so it’s nice to just sit there together and think ‘wow!’.”

And finally…

“I visited Love My Dress every morning on the train to work, swooning over other weddings, and I’m still doing so now I’m married. I love the relaxed nature of the blog, and that most weddings are so individual and personal to the couples. The story that goes with the weddings and all the planning appeals to me most I think; this is where Love My Dress really stands apart from other wedding blogs, and the passion of Annabel and the team really shines through in the writing and features.”

I just had to add this last little bit- thank you so much Laura!

Thank you so much to Laura and Neil, and to Sarah-Jane Ethan as ever.  I feel so full of sunshine now!

Much love,

Shona x

  1. Lovely to see my cousin’s wedding featured here. It was a fabulous day and they didn’t stop smiling. Lartington Hall is a fabulous venue; beautiful rooms and breathtaking views. Seeing how pretty Laura looked in her dress I think you will agree that my cousin is a very lucky man!

  2. Hi Shona, Annabelle & team! I’ve only just got round to posting a comment on here (despite reading our feature at least once a week haha!) I can’t believe we’re nearing a year since getting married! Having this feature on LMD with the planning story and everything else is just amazing for us, if our memories ever start to fade we can refer back to this and it all comes flooding back. Something amazing to treasure forever 🙂 Thank you all again for all the inspiration, and for featuring us.

    Laura & Neil xx
