An Aynhoe Park Eccentric English Country Wedding + Temperley London Dress

Umm guys, how is it May already!? But May means it’s almost June, which means it’s almost only a year to go until I get married in Tuscany…HOORAY! I’m suffering long engagement impatience over here! Now a little while before my lovely fiancé popped the question in bed over a badly made cup of tea (give the man credit, it was on a surprise birthday weekend break in Copenhagen), my parents went to the most amazing all-weekend party (I know right, better social life than me) and came back raving about the venue: Aynhoe Park. They said if I were to ever get married in England (sorry Dad), this would be the place.

Allow me to introduce to you to George, an Interior Stylist, and Nick, a Business & Development Consultant at Lipton Plant Architects, and their fabulously eccentric English country wedding and you’ll soon see why. George and Nick wed on 5th September, 2015 in the beautiful St Mary’s Church in Adderbury and continued their hazy late summer day at Aynhoe Park. St Mary’s holds such poignant, tender memories for our bride; it was the obvious place for her to marry the love of her life.  Let’s start with their gorgeous vintage style Super-8 film wedding flick, beautifully created by s8 films.

“We wanted it to be a classic, romantic English garden wedding but also a really playful, decadent celebration with a certain eccentricity and quirkiness, which Aynhoe Park was perfect for. We were guided by Aynhoe Park with its sense of glamour and quirkiness, it really is the most enchanting house. We wanted the wedding to also have a fun ‘away in the countryside feel’, with wild looking flowers and soft romantic pastel colours.”

Our bride was an avid Love My Dress reader in the run up to her nuptials and it’s lovely to find a whole host of Little Book for Brides members popping up in the couple’s supplier list; from the soft, mismatched Monsoon bridesmaids dresses to stunning Lamplighter London stationery to pretty earrings from bridal boutique Mirror Mirror. George also turned to Little Book for Bride’s amazing Emmy London for her sumptuous shoes.

George and Nick employed the amazing Liz Linkleter to help orchestrate their day, yet another of our amazing Little Book for Brides members.

“Liz helped in the final two weeks of wedding planning, on the evening before and on the day of the wedding. She was invaluable with scheduling and coordinating all of the suppliers. Her organisational skills are superb. Liz had some really lovely creative suggestions too and also dressed the venue to make sure everything ran smoothly on the day.

It was amazing having someone there to take a lot of the stress out of the day and allow us be able to to focus on the occasion and being with our guests.”

George chose the romantic Bluebell by Temperley London and added a stunning Temperley Juliet Cap veil atop her gorgeous golden tresses, both bought from Temperley London in Mayfair.

“I tried on so many dresses, then I just fell in love with the movement of this dress. When you walk it turns into a completely different dress and cascades behind you, it’s so dramatic but also quite classic and simple. I loved that it was romantic but also had a modern element too. It fitted me perfectly and I felt so amazing in it and also so comfortable.”

The lovely couple gifted their bridesmaids with Monica Vinader friendship bracelets in rose gold, engraved with their names and a special message from the newlyweds. What a sweet, personal touch and the perfect accessory for their soft, flowing Monsoon dresses and incredible flower crowns created by Lara of Wild Renata Flowers.

“Lara is so talented and individual, with so many inspiring ideas. She is a friend and it’s always such fun working and creating beautiful things with your friends. I knew Lara would do the most amazing job, she is really creative and I completely trust her style. I loved the bridesmaids headpieces so much, I think they were possibly one of my favourite elements. Each headpiece was different and fitted the girls beautifully. All the button holes were unique as well and everything had the most beautiful romantic touch. She gave us the right balance of contemporary, fun style with a classic country palette.”

And how adorable is George’s mini maid in her Dovecote dress by Gilly Gray London?

“I had a fun feather headpiece for the evening from Fat Faced Cat on Camden Passage in Islington and I wore Philosykos perfume by Diptyque Paris; I love it, it’s so fresh, light and beautiful and Nick bought it for me. I wore a diamond bracelet which was my mother’s and earrings from Mirror Mirror. My hair and make-up were by Portraits Bridal – they were just amazing.”

George’s exceptionally proud-looking brother gave her away, just look at that beaming smile! A family friend drove them to the church in his vintage car and together the siblings walked down the aisle to the classical Entrance of the Queen of Sheba.

We chose St Mary’s church in Adderbury as it’s where I grew up and where my family home is. I was christened there and we had my father’s funeral there too; the church holds hugely significant memories for my family. I wanted to share the beautiful place where I grew up with our friends and families, and to get married in a place which holds such dear memories.”

We used the traditional vows suggested by the Vicar – we wanted that bit to be traditional and the weight of the words struck a chord for all involved.

We had two readings: Sonnet 116, by William Shakespeare and I Will be Here by Steven Curtis Chapman.”

I will be here,
When you feel like being quiet,
When you need to speak your mind I will listen.

Through the winning, losing, and trying we’ll be together,
And I will be here.
If in the morning when you wake,
If the future is unclear,
I will be here.
As sure as seasons were made for change,

Our lifetimes were made for years,
I will be here.

“We loved the message in both of the readings and found them both very beautiful and so different. We wanted to have both a contemporary and a traditional reading.”

“Nick was my Estate Agent, no joke! He won me over with his happy-go-lucky nature and super positive, anything-is-possible character, and of course cheeky charm! We met on a house viewing in 2010 in Islington. Two years ago we decided to take a career break and travel the world for 7 months, and it was without a doubt one of the best things we have ever done.

It still blows my mind quite how much we saw and did –  I would do it again in a second. It was while we were away in South America visiting Iguazu Falls in June 2014 that Nick proposed to me, it was such a beautiful place and such a special moment.”

The couple’s photographer captured some gorgeous confetti shots as they left the church – how happy does Nick look, and so handsome too in his Gieves & Hawkes suit. I love the natural light shining through all of these images.

“Chloe from Caught The Light really was fantastic. I loved how she captured the day and how natural and beautiful all the photos are. She was so great, suggesting ideal places for the portrait shots and also relaxing us.”

“It’s all such a whirlwind and we loved how Chloe was so organised and confident and made us feel so at ease. She was very discreet but also managed to get all the photos we wanted. Her attention to detail is just amazing and there’s some lovely touches. She makes you the most amazing album and gives you all the photos wrapped up beautifully in a bundle with chocolates and ribbons.

We couldn’t recommend Chloe enough.”

We chose Aynhoe Park; it’s just the most magical place and it happens to be a local venue! It’s in the next village and we wanted somewhere close to the church. Aynhoe Park fit the bill in a practical sense but more importantly it was something of a dream for me to get married there when I was younger. I grew up driving past Aynhoe, so it’s always been a part of my history.”

After Nick and I looked round he was obviously smitten too – it’s so much fun. Nick loves architecture and it has a history and grandeur but isn’t a museum. We love how James Perkins has brought out the personality of the house and transformed it into the most breath-taking place that you get to enjoy to the full. It’s captivating and feels so welcoming; you just can’t help fall in love with it. The house was designed for grand parties when it was built and the owner lets you savour that.”

The beautiful stationery was created by Chiara from Lamplighter London and in a second London local nod, George and Nick sourced their wedding rings from their local jeweller EC One.

“I knew Chiara when we used to work together at Proud in Camden. I love her work, she has a lovely hand and real talent – she did such a great job with the stationary, I loved it all. She also did really fun save the dates for us too – pictures of when were both children. She created the most beautiful sketch logo of the giraffe and balloons in Aynhoe Park; it featured on all of the stationary from the order of service to the the menus and was special and unique.”

“The hanging garlands in the marquee were our florist Lara’s idea; as we had long banquet style trestle tables with sharing meat platters and ottolenghi style salads, we couldn’t have flowers on the table. We love all the amazing things in Aynhoe already and only needed to add a few touches to the interior. We used large pastel coloured balloons along with LOVE and G&N foil balloons and then got a custom lighting display to enhance the architectural features of the house.”

A delicious wedding breakfast was provided by Indulgence, who came highly recommended by Aynhoe – this is one satisfied wedding party. And cake lovers, you’re in luck – Pomp de Franc made one delicious looking cake.

“Years ago I was at a food fair off Brick Lane and I saw one of her cakes and thought then, if I ever got married I would love a Pomp De Franc cake. It looked almost too good to eat and fitted our pastel style. Everyone said how tasty it was!”

George and Nick’s favourite part of their day was when their oompah band, The Iron Boot Scrapers, went around the tables playing to their guests.

“Just before the wedding breakfast was served they came to our section of the table and played B52’s Love Shack, and we were absolutely in the moment… celebrating together, married, singing along with our best friends and family so joyful around us.”

Wow! That glittering dance floor is out of this world and when the ‘amazing things’ in your venue include a life-size unicorn and a levitating taxidermy giraffe, you just know it’s a perfect recipe for eccentric English elegance.

“We gave mini sparklers and diamanté stickers as favours, which everyone used to decorate their faces. Inside the envelopes, decorated with each guest’s name in the most beautiful calligraphy by Chiara at Lamplighter London, were little notes saying ‘sparkle the night away.’ We weren’t big on the favours thing and wanted something that would add to the actual day rather than something for people to take away. Seeing the parents with sparkle eyebrows was great fun!”

“Our dance floor music was provided by Family Funk and our first dance was to Riptide by Vance Joy. Two years ago we went travelling, and spent a few months in Australia where we hired a camper van and drove up the East Coast. The camper van didn’t have an iPod jack and would only play CDs.

We could only find a few worth buying from some random fuel stations and on the best of the CDs was Vance Joy’s Riptide. We came to really love it and listened to it over and over. It always reminds us of our amazing trip and the adventures we’ve been so lucky to go on together. Wherever one of us is, if we hear this tune it instantly reminds of us of that special time.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom

Do exactly what you want, you can sometimes get caught up with so many decisions and options and trying to please everyone and each other, but it’s important to stay focused on your instinct: it’s your special day. Let your groom get involved as much as he wants early on as he’ll soon be less involved when he realises the true scale of what there is to do… and let you get on with it!

Also someone told me to enjoy the planning, which is so true, the day and the weekend are over so quickly so enjoy every second of the planning and remember that it’s supposed to be fun! We had an event on the Friday night before and on Sunday. If possible it’s certainly great to have more than just the one day with your family and friends as it all flies by so quickly. Make a real weekend of it.

The wrong version of our first dance song was played. We should have checked that. There were some tiny things which didn’t go perfectly on the day but nothing we care about now and can think of that we would do differently.”

Exceptionally good advice George, and a recurring reminder from our brides to just let go and enjoy the day. We’ve organised a dinner to gather family and friends the night before our wedding  – hopefully it’ll also be a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other so the day itself is that little bit more relaxed.

Thank you ever so much to George and Nick for sharing their beautiful day, and to Chloe at Caught The Light for brightening our Thursday with these lovely light-filled photographs.
