A 1970’s Vintage Gown For An Intimate And Personal York City Wedding

Hello you lovely lot! And how are we all doing today? Today’s couple are a creative pair working in the fashion and media industry, and it’s clear from their wedding photos that they have a true eye for style.

Keeping their day personal, and featuring everything they love about their hometown and each other, it’s a loved up, down-to-earth and intimate day, tailor-made for the beautiful two-some. So without further ado, let’s introduce you. Fashion marketing manager Julia and videographer Cal were married on 9th September 2017 at Thirteen Thirty One in York.

“Like the venue we wanted the whole day to feel very personal, rather intimate and special. Cal loves vintage cameras and film (comes with the job) and I’m a big fan of classic vintage fashion (and music), especially the era of the late 60s and 70s. We’re both avid travellers and are fascinated by the romantic nostalgia of vintage travel. 1331 is the perfect place for avid film fans and makers in York which also tied in nicely on the day.”

In keeping with Julia’s love of vintage and theme of the wedding day, she chose an original 70s vintage dress modified by designer Hayley Neil at Glory Days Vintage in York.

“I’d already set my heart on another dress in Hayley’s studio however, when I walked in the second time with my mum who had flown over from Germany, and saw this dress, I knew it was the one. It was the first dress in which I felt truly comfortable (I’m not a dress girl). It highlighted what I wanted it to highlight and smoothed over areas I don’t necessarily like as much. It also just felt like me. I love shirts with collars and it even had a kind of collar.”Julia’s dad provided the favours of little bride and groom boxes with Lindt chocolate and Cal designed all of the stationery himself.

“Our event planner Lydia came with the venue and she was an absolute star! Always organised and responsive when you needed her, at the same time relaxed and calm – exactly what we needed.”

The vintage-loving couple met back in 2012 and were engaged two years later after a rather unconventional proposal.

“Since 2011 we’ve been in the vicinity of each other, even with me going back and forth to Germany. We were both working at the theatre and bumped into each other a few times until we finally met properly in 2012. In 2014 we got engaged and were engaged for two years before we got married. The engagement was rather unspectacular and unconventional; we just decided to get married and picked a ring!”

The bride chose not to wear a veil but did wear a pair of Rainbow Club shoes, a bespoke flower comb in her hair by Rebecca at Gypsy Rose VintageJo Malone Mimosa Cardamom and Wood Sage and Sea Salt as her scent and a collection of necklaces, earrings and bracelets from Links of London and Thomas Sabo.

The bridal and bridesmaids bouquets had a touch of vintage about them and were created by York based florist Dutch Nurseries.

“I’ve always loved this little florist shop and looked at it every time I passed it and had a good gut feeling about them. I picked the flowers because they fitted the feel of the wedding. Sunflowers are my favourite flowers. My knowledge of flowers is very limited but Kelly, the head florist at Dutch Nurseries, was so patient with me and explained and showed me everything that I wanted to know.”

The groom looked effortlessly cool in a 3-piece suit from French Connection via Moss Bros accessorised with a 150 year old Golden Suisse pocket watch; a family heirloom from Julia’s side of the family.

The bridesmaids looked gorgeous in full-length ASOS dresses in various colours and styles plus their own shoes and a Buckley London bracelet.

“My favourite part of the day was walking down the aisle and seeing everyone on the day for the first time. Their faces and reactions were fab!”

“If I could do it all again I’d probably include a bit more live music within the ceremony but that’s such a minor thing. We would also have invested in a band. We originally thought the venue was to small but in retrospect it would have been nice.”

Julia’s dad walked her down tha aisle to Your Song by Ellie Goulding and they chose two readings for the ceremony: What Is It by Erich Fried and Love by Roy Croft.

After the wedding rings, from Ernest and Jones and TCJ Designs, were swapped and the ceremony was over, the newlyweds exited to a confetti shower before sitting down to their wedding breakfast provided by the restaurant at 1331.

With Cal working in a similar industry himself, Cal already had a few contacts when it came to photography and after finding out that Lianne Gray had recently moved into wedding photography, reached out to her to ask if she would capture his and Julia’s wedding on camera.

“Cal had previously worked with Lianne on other projects. We loved that her aim is to make the photo’s look like a film. I was really nervous during our pre-wedding shoot but Lianne was absolutely great and we eased into the situation very easily. On the wedding day she was absolutely great.”

“We loved having her around and she managed to capture moments we didn’t even notice on the day. She left the wedding at 10pm, had an hour to drive home, and when we woke up the next morning, she had already sent us some sneak peaks from the day. We both work a lot with photographers for work but we’ve never met anyone more passionate and invested than Lianne.”

“We chose the venue because it was one of our first dating spots and we just love going there. We always wanted a venue that felt authentic and felt just like us. 1331 is a bit quirky, laid back, has a vintage aspect, is versatile, does good food, has the typical feel of York to it and even has a little cinema!”

“As a typical city girl, I always wanted to get married in the city directly and have an intimate wedding in a smaller venue. We looked at manor houses and countryside venues but it just didn’t feel like the right option for us.”

The decor was all centered around the couple to give a personal feel, with touches of vintage to tie the theme together.

“Everything on the day had a particular meaning to us. The cameras were from Cal’s collection, the vintage books were from my book shelves. My engagement ring features an amethyst which is my birth stone and family stone. My perfume was selected from Jo Malone and the fragrance featured the smells of a late summers day; very warm, fresh and at the same time, with a wooden note to symbolise the following autumn. We used a globe as our guest book to reflect our love for travel and an old vintage hat box for cards.”

The wedding cake was a gorgeous 4-tier naked cake decorated with fresh summer berries and created by Jessica’s Homemade Cakes.

“Neither of us are big fans of icing so went for a naked cake with mixed red fruit. We picked our favourite flavours; Black Forest gateaux (a must for me being German!), coffee and walnut, lemon and a Victoria sponge.”

The evening entertainment was kicked off by the couple performing their first dance as husband and wife to Not With Haste by Mumford and Sons followed by a DJ.

“We listened to Mumford and Sons a lot when we first got together and just loved the song. It’s honest and raw and just everything we hope for with sadness far away.”

Words Of Wedded Wisdom

“I was a very relaxed but hyper-organised bride up until a month before the wedding. I would recommend planning as much as you can before the last 4 weeks before the wedding. That was the time when I suddenly started to feel super nervous and excited and emotional and it all felt very real. I left lots of things, such as table cards, favours etc. very late, but it all adds up then suddenly, you have loads left to do with just two weeks to go. I would recommend avoiding that! My tip for the day would be to breath deeply, smile a lot and just take it all in.”

What a gorgeous day, wouldn’t you agree? And I’m loving the cinema-style black and white photos which we can give full credit and thanks to photographer Lianne Gray for. A big congratulations also goes out to the newlyweds for pulling off a blinder of a day.

Until next time…

Much love,

Holly x
