Things To Consider When Choosing Your Wedding Dress – Advice From Jesus Peiro

Choosing your wedding dress isn’t about buying an outfit. It’s about enjoying an experience and selecting a once-in-a-lifetime piece of clothing that goes well beyond simply being a dress.

Your wedding gown becomes a part of your occasion and I can guarantee that by the end of the day, there’ll be memories in every inch of fabric. To help you choose the gown that suits you best, I spoke to Marion Mathews, UK agent for the wonderful Jesus Peiro to find out more.

The first step towards your dress is taken at a bridal boutique and from my own recent experience, I can tell you that these are almost miraculous spaces. If you’re preparing for your first bridal appointments, here’s Marion’s wonderful advice that outlines just what you should do before you visit a boutique.

What are your most important ‘key deciders’?

“As the landscape of bridal dress shopping continues to change researching your options before visiting a store has become ever more vital. Think about the key deciders in your dress decision. What is important to you? If sustainability and ethical production are values you hold dear then making decisions about your wedding that represent your values seems like a good plan.”

“Your wedding dress is most likely the most expensive item of clothing you will ever buy, a once in a lifetime chance to have a dress fitted exactly to your body shape.”

“Online research has an important place in that but be careful about over exposure to images too, remember that many online images have been edited so using them to identify the overall style you like is really useful but don’t forget to keep an open mind.”

“Setting a realistic budget is a good idea and do tell your bridal consultant if there is a price point you feel uncomfortable going beyond so that they can show you dresses within budget. While matching a dress to the style of venue is important weddings are less about rules nowadays and more about being true to yourself and your personality so wear what makes you feel fabulous and comfortable above all.”

Go with your heart

Boutiques can be overwhelming – you’ll never have seen so many stunning gowns in one place! Definitely go with your heart and listen to your gut (as well as the experts in the boutique) but it’s also important to think a little practically too, as Marion explains:

“Although you only wear the dress for one day the images of you in that dress will be with you and those close to you for your whole life. This is the image that will be on the wall and possibly the homes of your relatives and the photographs your children will see in the future to remind them of how you looked at this time. No pressure then! Feeling good and comfortable in what you are wearing will show on your face.”

Consider the practicalities

“Practicalities are important because you are not going to look radiant if you are worried about showing too much cleavage or if you have some heavy boning digging into you. Walking gracefully will come if you aren’t trying to manoeuvre a less than practical gown around. Hooped petticoats can provide surprising ease for fuller skirted dresses, keeping the fabric away from the body and allowing you to move easily. Think too about the evening time, you want to be able to boogie with your guests so make sure the store can bustle away the train or look to a dress that offers a formal look for the day and less formal one for the evening (by removing an overskirt, for example).”

“Try not to decide what you want before you visit your boutique too. Looking at images online is one thing but there is no substitute for judging how you feel in a dress when you are trying it on in store, quality fit and fabric contribute to the feel-good feeling and the only way to find out how a dress really feels is to try it.”

Consider the price tag

Jesus Peiro definitely want you to enjoy your experience at the boutiques that stock their gowns. All of the boutiques they work with understand how the dresses are made so they can advise you on any options that are available in terms of size of design. Jesus Peiro stockists also offer one-to-one appointments so you’re sure to get both privacy and the undivided attention of the boutique staff.

Now, I know that a wedding dress is a huge emotional and financial investment. Why do wedding dresses cost what they do?

“Low cost mass produced clothing has skewed the true cost of handmade clothes,” says Marion. “Sourcing quality fabrics, investing in design, manufacturing to ethical standards and above all hand-cutting and individually making each garment is expensive.”

“If you compare the cost of an average wedding dress to items of haute couture designer clothing they actually represent very good value for money when you consider you are having a dress made just for you in the highest quality fabrics and with individual service from your store.”

“Jesus Peiro is the only Spanish bridal brand with the coveted ‘Made in Spain’ accreditation mark, certifying that each gown is made in Spain to the highest ethical standards. Jesus Peiro gowns are not as expensive as you might expect, most of the best-selling styles fall in the £1,800-£2,800 price bracket.”

I do agree with Marion there – we’ve all been lulled into a false sense of security over costs when cheap, fast fashion is everywhere (have you watched that Stacey Dooley documentary?) However, we also know that these forms of mass production aren’t great for the environment and the quality of the items themselves can be less than perfect. When you’re looking for your wedding dress, it makes sense to look for something that’s ‘more’ than you would ordinarily and, whatever your budget, the perfect dress will be out there for you.

So, before you head to your chosen boutique to begin the search for your dress, here are Marion’s top tips for wedding dress shopping. Take note!

  1. Try to keep it a positive experience by not over-shopping. Visiting 10 or 20 shops might seem like a good idea but the sheen will soon go off the experience. It’s much better to research in advance and choose the most appropriate shops, visit those and then relish and enjoy the experience.
  2. It’s a good idea to wear seam free, nude underwear to your appointment and to bring along a shoe with a similar heel height to the ones you hope to wear.
  3. Don’t bring too many people. It is difficult to get consensus with a large group and having too many people will distract you from focussing on how you really feel in a dress. One or two people who you trust and who you know have your best interest at heart is perfect.
  4. Keep an open mind and ask your consultant for advice on what they think will suit you – they have seen each dress on every conceivable body shape so know what dresses work on what shapes.

All that’s left for me to say is enjoy every moment of finding your wedding dress. It’s an experience unlike any other.
