The Aurelian: A Butterflies + Moths Inspired Bridal Editorial by Kate Cullen

It is such a pleasure to be able to end this week on Love My Dress with this truly beautiful editorial shoot and the work of one of my favourite creatives, the incomparable Kate Cullen.

I’ve been a fan of Kate’s sublime work for a long time now – you have to take a moment to check out her latest venture, Nurture & Bloom, it’s a love letter to creatives everywhere and the magazine is a must-read. Kate’s words follow…

“This is a collaborative editorial shoot based on inspiration from ‘The Aurelian’ a 19th century journal on butterflies and moths, as well as the meaning of the word which is ‘golden’.”

“We were inspired by patinas and verdigris combined with Victorian botanical and naturalist illustrations all combined with fashion forward bridal wear to give a modern take on orangery weddings. The gardens and orangery at Hamswell House are just perfect for small intimate weddings, with its beautiful light and views across the Bath landscape.”“The floral foliage backdrop was created using an eclectic mix of hothouse flowers and ferns, mixed with opulent orchids in shades of green and white that mirror the verdigris elements seen on the jewellery and stationery.”

The delicate chic feel is carried throughout in the details of the shoes and intimate ‘table for two’ set up that we feel would be a wonderful post-wedding breakfast idea for couples the morning after the wedding. To sit alfresco and take in the beauty of the country house landscape around them.”

That was the first thing I had to learn about her, and maybe the hardest I’ve ever learned about anything – that she is her own, and what she gives me is of her choosing, and the more precious because of it. Sometimes a butterfly will come to sit in your open palm, but if you close your hand, one way or the other, it – and its choice to be there – are gone. – Barbara Hambly
