Defying Bridal Age Limitations: The 60+ Bride

DEFIANCE 0015

It’s no small co-incidence to me that on the day I choose to reshare this powerful message from Kate Halfpenny which addresses fat phobia in journalism, that we are also sharing an article that highlights an issue that always seems to fall last on the spectrum of ‘isms’ and prejudices; age.

The vision behind this editorial, aptly named ‘Defiance’, was to show how age does not defy beauty or indeed feeling beautiful when it comes to being a bride.

There doesn’t need to be ‘age appropriate’ dresses or a more subtle form of make up, or understated florals or decor or anything else for that matter,  simply because a bride does not fit within an age bracket that society has conditioned us to perceive as ‘normal’ and ‘acceptable’ for brides.

This elegant set of images shows with such grace how brides age 60+ have every right to wear the dress, to be beautified, to have long hair in a braid and to embrace all that is being a bride.

These photographers were sent in by Rebecca Green of The Unique Cornish Event Company, and I loved them instantly. This was a little passion project for Rebecca, so I’m going to allow her to tell you more…

“Inspired by models such as the sensational Carmen Dell’Orefice in their 60’s – 80’s, going with their age, allowing their hair to go silver, keeping their lines but being full of energy and great style. We wanted to show women of all ages that no matter what their age, they could and should go for it on their big day.”

“Lucy, our model, is in great shape and she’s beautiful. We were able to showcase her figure in a Catherine Deane skirt and body. An outfit that no one would dare say had to be ‘age appropriate’ – she looked hot!”
