I have so enjoyed spending time in conversation with our recommended vendors recently but this conversation in particular, with Scottish wedding photographer Carole-Ann Scott of Harper Scott has been one of my favourite sessions.

Carole-Ann and Hazel of Harper Scott Photo and Films create timeless, editorial wedding photography for discerning, design-led couples who value authentic moments, meaningful details, and a touch of adventure. With over a decade of experience capturing weddings across Scotland, London, and Italy, they focus on minimal posing and maximum love.

I’m passionate about humanising the wedding industry in a way that feels truly authentic – introducing the faces and people behind the business names, not as Instagram reels might suggest they should present themselves, but in a relaxed, genuine way that reflects who they really are. On that note, ladies and gentlemen, meet the wonderful, warm, friendly, funny and very lovely, Carole-Ann Scott of Harper Scott.

I don’t identify myself as a wedding photographer – I’m a creative person who happens to work in the wedding space. I’ve taken my creative brain and focussed it on the wedding industry and have been doing this for the last ten years.

My photography is an expression of who I am. I am creative and I get bored easily, so I like to experiment and have fun!

Describe your photography style?

Every wedding that I shoot, I’m looking for that killer incredible beautiful light that will elevate the ordinary to something that could be on Vogue, and that’s the thing – a lot of client swill come to me and say ‘you work with really cool people’ – taking that they are the kind of people that would be in Vogue, but they’re not, it’s jut how I use light.

And that’s my favourite part, how I create that magic.

It’s a synchronicity of finding the light, creating the light, nailing the composition because for me, every single image needs ot be beautiful and meaningful and a stand alone piece in it’s own right.

I want to create something that is beautiful and that’s what I enjoy on every single wedding day – hunting and working hard to bring it all together.

The majority of clients who book me will say something on the lines of ‘Oh my goodness, I’m not like the people on your website!’ – and the amount of times I’ve had to say to them, ‘….that’s why you are booking someone like me – to capture that, to capture your essence in an authentic way’.

There’s very little direction – in fact most of what I shoot is in the moment. People find that hard to believe but I’m really fastidious about light compassion and hunting out those moments.

Your view on group shots?

I run a tight shop when it comes to the group shots, but tight and efficient doesn’t mean boring and we have so much fun – we play around with different combinations of how people stand.

It’s important to carve out a little bit of time to remember that moment that is never going to be repeated in your entire life with all those people together.

My clients love group shots – it’s part of the day. It’s part of the experience. It isn’t just something you do, it’s something that we experience together.

What’s your advice to couples setting out to find their wedding photographer?

It sounds really naff, but go with your gut and don’t over think it. Find some photographers who you really like – whether that’s through venue recommendation or word of mouth, which is always good.

But honestly, don’t over think it.

Make sure you look through full wedding photographer galleries and never just rely on what you see on Instagram. This is really important, as photographer’s website and social media accounts represent the best of their work – you need to check that a photographer’s work is consistently good throughout the whole day. And then it comes down to budget.

I know some photographers who have been on styled shoots and they have great portfolios with great light and great couples – so you really need to consider that what you are seeing online is authentic and real. I have over 100 reviews on Google and I’ve worked really hard for them, but it’s because I want to reassure my couples that I’m the real deal.
