Happy Good Friday everyone! I can hear a collective sigh of relief from you all, as it can be a very busy time in the week leading up to the Easter break. I have the perfect remedy to start off the holiday – take some time out right now with a hot cup of tea or coffee and pour over these utterly gorgeous, light-filled images by one of Annabel’s (and my!) favourite wedding photographers, Sarah Gawler Photography.
Meet lovely Sophie, whose beautiful smile lights up every picture, and her Royal Marine husband Oli, who were married on a bright and sunny day on 25th May 2013 at Pentillie Castle, an absolutely breathtaking location in Saltash, Cornwall. The family castle set the scene for the couple’s relaxed affair, together with their neutral colour scheme – take a look how elegant those bridesmaids in white look.
“Pentillie Castle is run by Oli’s family and it meant the world to us to be married there. We started the celebrations on the Friday night with a candlelit party in the Victorian greenhouse. We hoped this would set the tone for an intimate and relaxed wedding rather than a formal event the next day. We opted for a colour palette of whites and neutrals.”

Sophie chose the divine ‘Esme’ dress by Jenny Packham – just look at the incredible jewel detail … the bride simply sparkles in the sunshine.
“I loved how relaxed it made me feel and all the beautiful embellishments.”
To complement her dress, Sophie donned a pair of Rachel Simpson Shoes, a long wispy veil, tear-drop earrings, a silver bangle, and finished off her pretty look with fresh flowers in her hair.
Her four maids wore angelic white LK Bennett dresses and their own shoes. I *love* this crisp look of both bride and bridesmaids wearing the same neutral shade; it’s so effective in photographs, especially on such a brilliant sunny day.
The handsome groom and his groomsmen wore their Royal Marines and military attire, with Oli changing into the striking red coat of his uniform for the reception.
Sophie and Oli had a church ceremony, with Sophie’s Dad walking her down the aisle. A very pretty floral arch set the scene for the ceremony – and an incredibly special and memorable added touch was the incorporation of the couple learning their vows by heart.
“Oli had suggested that we learn our vows by heart and, although they took us months to learn, saying them to him without prompt made the words so ardent, and hearing Oli say them to me took my breath away.”
And in keeping with the military tradition, Sophie and Oli were treated to a guard of honour as they left the church ceremony.
Cru Events provided the guests with delicious-looking cuisine – and Sophie’s mum made the exquisite tiered cake, complete with delicate sugar-work, what a clever lady!
For the flowers it was a handmade tale, with Sophie’s mum and sister in charge of the delicate arrangements – shades of white, yellow and purple – which were hand picked from the woods on the castle’s estate. Such a gorgeous idea when you have access to woodland flowers and they perfectly complimented the green pots of fresh herbs that adorned the tables for the reception.
“The marquee was dressed with long wooden bistro tables, fresh herbs and garden flowers from the woods.”
I adore the way the couple arranged to have the menus tied on a little luggage tag like this to little vintage glass bottles – which doubled up as table centre pieces/vases.
Words of Wedded Wisdom
“Make time to enjoy some moments with your family in the days and hours before the wedding. That time is priceless. And remember if something goes wrong on the day, the chances are no one else will notice.”
I just can’t stop staring at these beautiful photographs of Sophie and Oli. The castle was such a magnificent backdrop to your big day; and, let’s be honest now, who doesn’t love a man in uniform?! And Sophie, please don’t ever stop smiling! A huge thank you to photographer Sarah for yet another brilliant wedding shoot. For more of Sarah’s stunning work, including styled shoots, see here.
