Whimsical Elegance in the Lowcountry: Charlotte and Tyler’s Laidback & Enchanting South Carolina Wedding

Wedding in Charleston, South Carolina

I’m thrilled to be sharing a US wedding today – a significant portion of our readers are in the United States, and so it’s a joy to share the beautiful South Carolina wedding of Charlotte and Tyler with you.

Their sweet and laid back summer wedding took place in the Lowcountry, a region along the South Carolina coast known for its rich biodiversity, picturesque salt marshes, and coastal waterways. The celebration was held in Charleston, at the very place where Charlotte and Tyler work together.

From the moment I saw the photographs, I fell in love with them. The entire day radiated a sweet, gentle energy, and there was a magical sense of laid-back elegance. Charlotte, an artist and painter, drew inspiration from the concept of a whimsical springtime fairytale. She aimed to incorporate natural and organic design elements throughout the day, and the result was a celebration brimming with effortless warmth and charm.

A heartfelt thank you to Maggie Dunn for sharing her delightful photography with us. Enjoy!

The Dress

All Who Wander

My dress was by All Who Wander. I had a wonderful experience shopping for my dress at Gown Boutique of Charleston. Alexis helped guide me to find dresses that fit my style and budget.

She was so kind and patient and made me feel comfortable throughout the whole process. I would absolutely recommend the Gown Boutique to other brides.

I tried on so many gorgeous dresses, but the one I chose just felt the most like me. I felt comfortable and confident in it and was able to move around easily. It was lightweight which is important when you are getting married in the Lowcountry in June.

The floral detail, neckline, and back of the dress were the things I loved most about it.

I was so happy with my hair and make-up! The ladies at Pampered & Pretty really created the look I was hoping for and everything lasted throughout the night even through the humidity, sweat, and tears.

My earrings were from BHLDN and I wore “I Do” by Anthropologie as my scent. I was not planning on having a special perfume for my wedding, but couldn’t resist this one! My shoes were by Bella Belle.

The Ceremony

Post House Inn, Charleston, SC

We got married at Post House Inn, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. We chose Post House because it is near and dear to us both. We began working at Post House about a year after moving to Charleston. Post House helped us find community in Charleston and felt like home right away.

Getting to plan our wedding alongside people we know and love just made it feel more special. It is a truly beautiful place, but the people are what set it apart from other places in the Charleston area.

My dad walked me down the aisle to ‘Here, There and Everywhere’, by The Beatles.

Our ceremony was lead by Casey of Custom Vows by Casey, who was fantastic. She helped create the whole ceremony for us. We are not religious, so we didn’t know where to begin with this process.

Casey made it so personal and beautiful. We wrote our own vows which I would recommend doing! I think so often at weddings, guests want to hear from the happy couple and so often, they don’t get a chance to. It also made both of us feel very present and in the moment.

My mother read an excerpt from ‘The Art of a Good Marriage‘, by Wilferd Arlan Peterson. We wanted my mom to be included in our ceremony and this reading really spoke to her and to us.

My engagement ring and wedding band were from Melanie Casey. I have very small hands. My ring size is a 3.5. I love delicate and dainty jewlery for this reason and Melanie Casey’s jewelery definitely fits that description.

Tyler’s wedding band is a hammered white gold band from Holden. Tyler is a big environmentalist and we loved that this company is sustainable, carbon neutral and based in the US.

Maggie Dunn Photography – I discovered Maggie through instagram and after connecting with her, I knew almost immediately that she’d be the one! She was so helpful, organised, and was a delight to work with. She really put me at ease and I felt like I had known her my whole life.

Our photos were so much more than what I had imagined. Your wedding day goes by so fast and when it is all over, the photos are such a treasure to keep the memories alive. I feel so grateful for Maggie and the work she did on our big day. I can’t recommend her enough.

While our guests were enjoying cocktail hour after the ceremony, we walked a couple of blocks from Post House to the water for photos. I loved having a quiet moment just the two of us to soak in the start of our marriage.

How They Met

We met working together at a restaurant in Asheville, NC in 2017. We connected immediately. In the summer of 2021, we visited Maymont while on vacation in Richmond, VA. It was a beautiful day. We spent the morning exploring the gardens. After meandering around through crowds of people, we eventually found ourselves walking alone on a quiet path leading up to the Maymont house.

We saw a doe and followed her up the hill towards the house. We walked into a gazebo and had this magical moment together watching this deer.

When I turned around, I found Tyler down on one knee. I was totally surprised! It was such a special and surreal moment that I know we’ll both remember forever.

Tyler wore a grey suit with brown oxfords, a white button down, and a floral tie. Tyler knew he wanted something lightweight, as well. We aren’t super formal or traditional, so he wanted a light grey suit.

It was very classic and fit him perfectly. The suit was custom made and he had a great experience with the folks who created it for him.

The Reception

We were very inspired by the style of Post House. I am a painter and really wanted the wedding to have a whimsical, artistic feeling. I created handmade candle holders and painted our save the dates, invitations, menus, escort cards, and matchbox designs.

I wanted everything to feel like a springtime fairytale. We really leaned into the spring feeling, and incorporated lots of green and floral patterns into the design. All of the handmade components created an organic style that felt natural and true to both Tyler and me and to the Post House.

Our floral designer was Branch Design Studio. Since we weren’t getting married at a traditional venue, it was important to us to have a floral arbor to create a focal point for our ceremony.

The ladies at Branch created the perfect arbor! I requested a springtime wildflower look and they did a great job. We also ordered a couple of buckets of wildflowers that we arranged ourselves in bud vases for the tables. The colors and flowers were lovely and fresh.

We had Handmade flower shaped candle holders and for favours, we supplied Matchbooks that I designed and got printed from For Your Party.

I designed all the stationery myself.

Tenacious Tart created a lavender cake with blackberry compote. The cake was covered in pressed flowers and was such a sweet centrepiece for our wedding. It was delicious, too!

Our first dance was to ‘These Arms of Mine’, by Otis Redding.

Words of Wedded Wisdom

Try not to stress about the little things! Remember that some things won’t go as planned, and that’s okay.
