An Ethereal, Moody &Atmospheric Wedding at Kinmount House, Scotland

Dani and Tyler married at Kinmount House in the south-west of Scotland, a grand country estate surrounded by woodland and water. Photographed by Raini Rowell, their November wedding reflected everything they hoped for from a celebration far from home in Montana; atmosphere, intimacy and understated style.

They were drawn to the architecture and sense of history at Kinmount House, choosing it for its character as much as its beauty. The main house became the backdrop for an autumn ceremony filled with warmth and light, and the photographs capture that mix of stillness and emotion perfectly.

Dani wore an ethereal, non-traditional gown by Flora & Lane that suited her beautifully, while Tyler chose a green tweed suit.

We loved the idea of having a wedding that was very different from the mountain top/wildflower aesthetic of our home, Montana. and one that highlighted built structures/architecture. We loved the “castle”/ethereal vibe and some non-traditional touches. Overall, it was important to us that it was an intimate day celebrated by those closest to us, which is why we settled on having a very small wedding party.

Venue/Inspiration

We chose Kinmount House because of the bathing house. We loved it so much and originally wanted to have our wedding there as we could imagine an intimate gathering.

However, they do not have weddings there so late in the season as the wind weather can be less than cooperative. We ended up having our wedding in the main house which they told us isn’t utilized very often but we ended up getting the best of both worlds with beautiful photographs of the bathing house and a stunning grandiose yet intimate ceremony in the main house.

The Dress

Flora & Lane

I found my dress through Flora & Lane. I flew to Chicago to try it on prior to purchasing it with some of my really close friends. It was a typical experience in a bridal shop. There was a snafu with my veil but they quickly rectified the issue and sent me the correct veil.

I would recommend this shop to any bride wanting something a little more nontraditional but still very dramatic.

I loved the idea of having a dress that was not quite white but not overly colourful. I loved how ethereal it looks and the sleeves have got to be one of my favourite parts.

I wore a cathedral length veil – also from Flora & The Lane. I also wore a bracelet which Tyler’s mother gifted the day of the wedding, and a long pink pearl chain that I loved with my dress along with pearl studs

My hair stylist was Gaynor of Elegant Bridal Hair Styling and my makeup artist was Hania McIntyre of Makeup by Hania.

Our florist was Blossom Bloom. We loved the idea of having thistle in the bouquets as well as gorse as the mustard colour went very well with Ty’s suit. We wanted it to have a fall vibe rather than a winter with lots of green.

We originally wanted peonies but they were unavailable at the time of year so we settled on antique roses which I actually liked better as it suited the fall season better.

As for Tyler’s suit, we also wanted something non-traditional but still dramatic and stylish – we found it at Peter Christian. We loved the detail on the green tweed where if you look closely, it resembles confetti.

We also had cufflinks for tyler that were pegasus that matched the design on my dress. His shoes were the Helsinki 2 design, by Ecco and he wore a pocket watch which his father gave him on the day of the wedding.

The Ceremony

We loved the idea of a celebrant as they are non-denominational in their practices. We loved using some wedding practices special to Scotland in our ceremony such as hand-fasting (our cord is still hung on our fireplace), band warming, and drinking from the quaich.

It was a fairly simple ceremony but Sarah did read a very well-known Celtic blessing at the end. Sarah offered this reading and we had both heard it and felt it was emblematic of what our loved ones would wish for us.

We opted for traditional vows as we felt you can’t promise anything more than what is written.

My engagement was from Dani Jackson. I loved the simplicity of the engagement band and the elegance of the oval-shape stone. I liked that it was ethically sourced moissanite as well. I loved the thick band for a wedding band and the pairing of the two together

Tyler’s ring is made from gold-plated hammered tungsten carbide. We liked the traditional look for his ring with the gold and the hammered detail will help hide imperfections that are sure to occur from daily use at his job.

Photography

We chose our photographer, Raini Rowell, because of the immaculate vibes of the photographs as well as having an excellent review from a friend who had eloped with her 😉 The photos we saw on instagram captured couples and their personalities so well. We felt like we were there at the ceremonies we saw.

We really loved the emotion that you can feel in all of the candid shots of couples and we were not disappointed when we saw our own, it was truly magical.

Raini and Dave made us feel very comfortable to be in front of the camera. The photos themselves are absolutely stunning – we were not prepared for just how beautiful our own photos were. We had the perfect wedding day, and a lot of it was due to Raini.

We would absolutely recommend Raini (and Dave!) to anyone eloping in Scotland!

Our favourite part of the day is when the venue owner’s wee dachshunds (approximately eight of them in all) ambushed us when we were tipsy and taking photos around the property!

How They Met

We had known about each other since we were both 19 years old but wouldn’t meet until we were 26. I (Dani) went to nursing school with Tyler’s mum back when she was barely an adult. Whenever I (Dani) would have relationship problems and talk to Erica about them, she would always say, “You just have to meet Tyler.”

We tease her about not introducing us sooner, but she responds with, “You two just weren’t ready.”

I (Dani) went to grad school in a different city but would travel back to Billings to pick up shifts at the hospital as a nurse during the pandemic, staying at various friends’ houses when I came into town.

I stayed at Tyler’s mum’s in June 2021. Tyler works as a UPS driver, and his parents’ house is on his route, so he usually has lunch there. We met while he was on his lunch break, and I said, “Hi, I’m Dani, and I’ve heard a lot about you.”

The next day was Saturday, and Ty came over to his parents’ to have a gin and tonic with his mum when I got off my shift at the hospital. We talked until the early morning hours that first night. I asked Erica for Tyler’s number, but she refused, wanting Tyler to be the first one to reach out, which he eventually did… days later.

We both knew pretty quickly into the relationship that this was it.

I “directed” Tyler to the exact ring I wanted. Tyler purchased said ring. One special thing that Tyler does most weekends is make me breakfast on Saturdays. He made waffles, cooked bacon, eggs, and hash browns. He hid the ring under a house of waffles for me to find. It was very sweet and simple and highlighted one way that Tyler consistently shows he cares.

The Reception

We didn’t need any additional venue styling – the venue was beautiful as it was.

Cake was by Alison Fawkes (who is unfortunately no longer in business). We wanted a simple cake more so just for the tradition of cake cutting. We  had vanilla buttercream as the filling and white chocolate ganache frosting

We took a first dance to Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” – our dog’s name is Elvis – he is our heart and soul!
